National Mathematical Olympiad of Singapore (NMOS) by NUS High School of Math and Science

What is NMOS?

NMOS stands for National Mathematical Olympiad of Singapore (NMOS). It is an annual national competition organised by the NUS High School of Mathematics and Science (NUS High School) since 2006 to stretch students’ mathematical potential.

Eligibility for NMOS

NMOS is opened to only Primary 5 students in Singapore (including international schools). The only caveat is that students will have to be registered by their primary schools and individual registrations are not allowed.

Changes to 2024 NMOS onwards

As of 8th March 2024, NUS High School of Math and Science has made some changes to the regulations of 2024 NMOS competition onwards. Below are some changes that you need to be aware of.

New updates for 2024 NMOS onwards

Our Detailed Analysis for Changes Made to 2024 NMOS Onwards:

  • Before 2024 NMOS, there were about 5000 students who participated in NMOS annually. There were about 80 Gold medallists with about 400 students who qualify for the Special Round,
  • With the new changes made to 2024 NMOS onwards, we will expect fiercer and tougher competition with about 60 Gold Medals for grab.
  • With a single round and stricter eligibility criteria, we will expect the level of difficulty to increase.
  • 3 most important topics in NMOS are: Number Theory, Combinatorics and Geometry. These topics have the most number of difficult  questions appearing in NMOS.
  • Mastery of Algebra and Speed is essential to be the TOP 20 in NMOS!

In preparation for the International Mathematics & Science Olympiad (IMSO), the top twenty students from the NMOS will be shortlisted for a training programme conducted by NUS High School of Mathematics and Science. Within the training squad, twelve pupils will eventually be selected to form the Mathematics team to represent Singapore in IMSO.
