Raffles Science Olympiad (RSO) By Raffles Institution (RI)

What is RSO?

RSO stands for Raffles Science Olympiad (RSO). It is an annual national competition which has been organised by Raffles Institution (RI) since 2009 with the aims to foster critical thinking and a love for science in Astronomy, Biology, Chemistry and Physics among Primary school pupils.

Eligibility for RSO

RSO is only for Primary 5 pupils in all primary schools in Singapore. There is only 1 round.

There is only 1 category of awards: individual awards.

a) Individual Awards:

Medals will be awarded to the participants of the competition based on their scores in Round 1.

Our Detailed Analysis for RSO:

From analysing RSO past year papers from 2015-2025, we have observed the following:
  • RSO questions are classified into 5 main modules – AstronomyEarth Science, Life Science, Physical Science and Data Analysis.  As RSO questions are more challenging, students will need to be familiar with lower secondary science topics. 
  • Mastering the 5 main modules (AstronomyEarth Science, Life Science, Physical Science and Data Analysis) is essential for students to excel due to the highly competitive nature of RSO.
